Camp Kuriakos turning 90

Feb 29, 2020 | 12:15 PM

A local summer camp is hitting a big milestone.

Camp Kuriakos is a faith-based camp with year-round activities and week long summer camps. The camp is turning 90 years old this April, and they’re having a celebration evening and fundraiser on April 25 at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre in Bentley.

A silent and live auction headlines the evening with about 100 items to be auctioned including local activities such as a free round of golf, and some big ticket items such as condo rentals in Fernie, Mexico, and others.

Entertainment is provided by volunteers who will sing camp songs that would normally be played at Kuriakos.

Paul Kopjar, Assistant Director of Camp Kuriakos, says the team has a big and ambitious goal when it comes to fundraising.

“The last few years, we’ve been raising $60,000 or $70,000. This year, we’ve said ‘hey it’s ninety, let’s raise $90,000’. We’ve set ourselves an extraordinarily ambitious goal, we’re really hoping that particularly our camp staff and camper alumni can help us out.” he says.

Activities to commemorate the 90th anniversary continue throughout the year. This year’s summer camp theme is “Generation to Generation.” There will also be a Thanksgiving Weekend celebration.
