Parkland Regional Library (PRL) is building a new two-story head office in the south end of Lacombe, after 60 years of being in the old building on 56 Avenue.

PRL Director Ronald Shepard said in a news release that constructing a whole new building was the most cost-effective way of ensuring a viable future.

“Our current building was constructed in 1960, and renovated in 1989. Due to our current operating requirements, it is not feasible to renovate the existing facility to meet our present and current day need.”

In order to pay for the construction, the current library building is being sold (to the City of Lacombe), and the provincial government has given a grant for $2.4 million.

The release also says the new building when constructed, will have many new features that offer state of the art services for the 49 public libraries PRL supports.

“Moving forward and growing to meet the demands of our region is a wonderful thing. Our new building is the foundation for another 60 years to come.” Shepard adds.

The transition to the new building is expected to be complete in fall of this year. Grand opening details will be unveiled closer to the date of completion.

The Parkland Regional Library System provides support to 49 public libraries serving 64 municipalities throughout Central Alberta.
