Red Deer College Athletics is proud to announce the Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week:

Sandra Garcia-Bernal – Queens Basketball
Hometown – Valencia, Spain
Kinesiology General (3rd year)

Garcia-Bernal was an energetic force for the RDC Queens Basketball team this past weekend. The third-year guard helped the Queens defeat the Ambrose University Lions in two crucial games, as RDC pushes for a spot in the playoffs. She also made Queens Basketball history. The Kinesiology General student added to her career steals total, becoming the RDC Queens all-time leader (148).

“Sandra plays hard every game. She is the ultimate competitor and brings a lot of that fire to the team, which as a coach you always appreciate,” said Queens Head Coach Mandy Botham. “She is one of the top defensive, if not the best defensive player in the league, and it was really great to see her break that record, and to do it in only three years.”

In Friday’s 77-51 road win, Garcia-Bernal approached a triple-double in a well-rounded performance. She contributed eight points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Then the hard-working student-athlete from Valencia, Spain accumulated seven points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist in Saturday’s impressive 73-35 home victory. Garcia-Bernal was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game.

Over 18 games this season, she has averaged 9.5 points, while shooting 39.9 per cent from the field. Garcia-Bernal ranks ninth in the league with 9.1 rebounds per game.

Tyronn King – Kings Basketball
Hometown – Toronto, Ontario
Legal Assistant (4th year)

Kings guard Tyronn King had an outstanding two-game set against the Ambrose University Lions. He averaged 27 points, ten rebounds and 5.5 assists, and created many highlight reel-worthy plays.

Despite Friday’s 106-90 road setback, King totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a steal, while connecting on six-of-six from the free-throw line.

Then the RDC Legal Assistant student was in a groove on Saturday and scored a game-high 33 points in the 103-77 home win. King remarkably added 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals, while sinking seven-of-ten from three-point range.

Over 19 games, King ranks ninth in league scoring, with 18.5 points per game. He’s also averaged 7.5 boards and 5.2 assists.
