24 Hour Hockey Game in Ponoka set for Feb. 7-8

Jan 14, 2020 | 3:45 PM

The Ponoka Minor Hockey Association is teaming up with KidSport Ponoka to host the first annual 24 Hour Hockey Game at the Ponoka Outdoor Rink.

The game will start on February 7 at 4 p.m. and go until 4 p.m. the following day.

”The original idea came up from our past president Cam Rice,” said Ryan Gillespie, vice president of the PMHA. “We want to get more involved in the community and better support the sponsors and businesses that support us. So we thought doing an event like this would be more creative, more successful than your typical going door to door and asking for donations.”

Gillespie added that because of the huge role KidSport plays in Ponoka, he wanted them to be a part of the fundraiser.

“They support so many of our families, so we want to join up and split the funds, if not more going to KidSport depending how successful it is. KidSport is amazing as they don’t just support hockey, they support all sports in Ponoka.”

Organizers are hoping to get 80 to 100 participants for the game, with around thirty registered to play as of January 14.

All participants must pledge or raise upwards of $250 to go towards KidSport and the PMHA.

“We’re very proud we haven’t had to raise our fees to our families for years, and we’d like to keep it that way. So if we have a successful fundraiser, the fees stay down and we can still provide a lot of benefits to our hockey players and families for being a part of minor hockey,” Gillespie says.

The game will begin on Ponoka’s outdoor rink before moving indoors at around 11 p.m. depending on the weather. It’ll move back outdoors at around 7-8 a.m.

Admission to watch the event is free with a donation to go towards the Ponoka Food Bank.
