LETHBRIDGE- A Lethbridge murder case is being profiled on a true-crime show.

In an episode to air this Thursday, the CBC series “The Detectives” is to feature Lethbridge police Sergeant Ryan Stef and his investigation into the murder of 78-year-old Irene Carter.

The show includes a dramatic re-enactment of the case and is entitled “Out of Lies.”

Carter, who was found murdered in her home in 2016, was initially thought to be a victim of a robbery gone wrong, but her daughter ended up being charged and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2018.

She received a life sentence.

“The researchers at CBC liked the fact that it was a unique case and that it involved a homicide where gambling was the main crux of the motive. Gambling is a huge social problem that doesn’t get a lot of airplay for homicides or major crimes like this. Also, we truly have an innocent victim,” Stef said.

He hopes that officers can learn from the techniques used during the investigation.

Stef adds that the case was a team effort, with around 90 officers from various policing units involved.
