Mr. Arvid “Harvey” Hedvig Strand of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away at Bethany CollegeSide, Red Deer on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the age of 87 years. Harvey was born in Heath, Alberta on October 15, 1930 and grew up in the Faust-Driftpile Area. He was the fourth child of six, growing up with three brothers, Ole, Karl and Iver and two sisters, Agda and Dagney. Harvey left school at a young age and got his first job as a carpenter. He married Mary Anne Pruss in October 1952. They, along with their four children moved to Edmonton, Blackfalds and then settled in Red Deer, where Harvey worked at Travelaire Trailers, until his retirement in 1995. For the later part of Harvey’s life, he found the friendship of Dorise Olson, who started as a friend and dancing partner, and finally became his constant companion. Harvey and Dorise were not only dancing partners but travel partners, travelling throughout Canada and around the globe, taking a million pictures along the way. Anyone who knew Harvey knew how much he loved to dance. If there was music playing, Harvey was; if not dancing, tapping his feet. He had a rainbow collection of fancy dancing shirts; each one matching Dorise’s fancy dresses. He leaves to mourn his passing his four children, Harvey Jr., Mike, Linda and Terri; Dorise’s family, who he came to think of as his own, Rick (Leisa), Rae, Cindy (Len); and his special grandchildren, Tammy (Tim), Adrian (Krystle), Nicholas (Kelsey); and great grandchildren, Kellie, Locklyn and Cole; as well as many special friends and dancing partners. Harvey was predeceased by his wife of thirty years, Mary Ann in 1982, and his beloved companion of thirty-five years, Dorise in 2016. A Celebration of Harvey’s Life will be held at the Parkland Funeral Home Reception Centre, 6287 – 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer Alberta, on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Harvey’s honor may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and NWT at www.alzheimer.ca/ab.
