Mr. Ellis “Gary” Brown of Red Deer, passed away at the Red Deer Hospice on April 29, 2019 at the age of 84 years. Gary was born at Gwarafog Farm, Garth, Breconshire, Wales UK to parents Dulcie and Glyn Brown. He spent his primary school years in Garth, and secondary school years in Builth Wells. He met the love of his life, Shirley, in secondary school and they celebrated 61 years of marriage together. Gary attended the University of Wales in Swansea where he completed an Honours degree in Metallurgy. Following university, he moved to Flin Flon, MB to work as a research metallurgist, and soon after asked Shirley to join him, where they were married. Gary and Shirley had two children in Flin Flon. David and Deborah, and then the family moved to Toronto, ON and then on to Trail BC where Gary worked in various types of metallurgical research. From there they went back to Wales and Gary completed his Bachelor of Education. The family returned to Canada, and Gary began his teaching career near and in Swift Current SK. Their third child, Alun, was born there. From there, the family moved again to Neilburg SK where Gary taught until his retirement. Another three moves via Lloydminster and Vermilion brought he and Shirley to Red Deer AB. Gary was a very enthusiastic sportsman, enjoying soccer, badminton, curling, and especially golf. Gary and Shirley spent many hours on golf courses and many days on the road travelling to various tournaments where they developed many long-lasting friendships. One of Gary’s most enjoyable pastimes was taking “mystery tours” around the backroads, poking into antique stores, thrift shops and small-town cafés. He also enjoyed holiday trips out to the mountains and spending time with his family. Gary was particularly proud of his two granddaughters Becky and Cathy and also had a very special love for his great grandson Aiden. Gary and Shirley also shared a great passion for classical music and opera, but nothing was as important to Gary as his family. While Gary loved the home country of Wales and all things Welsh, Canada became his home, and he was proud to be a Canadian. Gary was predeceased by his youngest son Alun. He leaves to mourn his wife Shirley, son David (Candis) and their daughter Rebecca and daughter Deborah and her daughter Catherine and her fiancé Kade; great grandson Aiden; daughter-in-law Marie Chantal and her husband Giles. Gary also leaves to mourn a larger loving family in Wales and England and many friends. We’ll miss you so much !
