It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mr. Carl Clarence Horobetz at Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the age of 87 years. Carl will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Hazel; their children, Donna (Jeffrey) Smith, Dwayne, Maureen Riehl, and Alaine Martin (Fred Biberdorf); eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Carl was born in Yorkton, SK to Nick and Annie Horobetz, the 3rd eldest of 8. He married Hazel Hamill April 21, 1956, and together raised their 4 children, starting in Winnipeg, MB, Medicine Hat, AB, Calgary, and finally settling in Red Deer since 1976.
Carl was a salesman through and through, and wherever he went he could strike up a conversation, and within minutes he would have made a connection and continue to visit and kibitz with complete strangers, many of whom he would then call his friend.
Carl honed his sales skills with his employment at Sears in the Home Improvement Department, Car-Zel Home Improvements, which he and Hazel had into the early 80’s, Parkland Custom Cabinets in which they were partners into the 90’s, and then into his final retirement selling solid oak furniture.
Volunteering was another outlet Carl enjoyed. He spent countless hours with the Red Deer Riggers selling 50-50 tickets at every game, as a Board member of the Memorial Society in Red Deer, delivering Meals on Wheels, driving for the World Juniors Hockey Tournament, and for many years selling Red Deer Hospital Lottery tickets and raffle tickets for the Festival of Trees in the hall of the Hospital, where he visited and sold with all who passed by him. He was profoundly proud of the hundreds of hours he spent over several years, making many new friends, and seeing countless friends and past customers.
Carl is also survived by his siblings Helen Raymond, Ernie (Adele) Horobetz, Russ (Delores) Horobetz, Rita (Al) Kruger and sister in law Heather Hamill.
Carl was predeceased by his parents Nick and Annie Horobetz, siblings Charlotte Lowrey, Rudy Horobetz, Florence Bouchard, Hazel’s parents Alfred and Verna Hamill and brother in law Gordon Hamill.
