Mrs. Catherine Bibiana Thomson, (nee McLellan) beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and friend, of Red Deer, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at the age of 71 years. During the month she spent in the hospital, she was constantly surrounded by her family and friends, bringing her treats, and laughter and love. Catherine was born on November 29, 1947 at Drumheller, Alberta. In 1967, she graduated as a Certified Nursing Aide from the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta. Catherine married her beloved Richard on July 20, 1968 and continued working briefly at the Foothills Hospital; while Richard was working for a Drilling Company, in the Yukon. Then, they started their family in Calgary, with the arrival of their first son, Bradley. Shortly thereafter, they decided to move their new family to help support the Thomson’s Family Farm near Somerset, Manitoba, due to Richard’s father’s health. After a short period, his father’s health improved. Following the arrival of their second son, Daniel, in Swan Lake, Manitoba, the couple decided to settle in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was in Winnipeg that Catherine took further training to become an LPN to meet Provincial Standards, between 1973 and 1974; and worked at the Misericordia Hospital. Richard established his own Trucking Business, as an Independent Contractor, with a Messenger Company. They lived in Winnipeg until the summer of 1979; as Richard’s career evolved to Shop Foreman at a Farm Equipment Dealership; and then as a Salesman for Industrial and Construction Equipment. Meanwhile, Catherine continued in her Nursing Career, between Hospital and Nursing Homes, while raising her two sons. This advancement in career for Richard had taken the family for a five year adventure in The Pas, Manitoba; where Richard continued his career within Sales and Trucking; while Catherine worked in the Emergency Ward at The Pas Community Hospital. Outside of work was where life revolved around their son’s hectic Hockey Schedule with The Pas Huskies AA Team, throughout Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. A Career change again led the family back to Winnipeg in 1985, and Catherine continued her career in Nursing and Richard within Trucking. Her sons graduated High School in Winnipeg but their careers ultimately led them: first Bradley and then Daniel, to Alberta; where Richard had joined Bradley in his Trucking Business, as part-time and then semi-retired. Shortly thereafter, Catherine retired from Nursing in Winnipeg and also moved to Red Deer. The common theme within Catherine’s life was to support her family in all capacities, sacrificing some of her dreams for the sake of her son’s interests, and her husband, within his career. She showed unfailing love and dedication to hold family together at all costs and fought hard for them. All of her intentions were always for the family she loved, and one of her dreams was to be back in Alberta, close to the mountains, and the McLellan side of her family; a dream that was fulfilled. Catherine cherished family and friends around her dinner table; filled with lots of laughter, turkey, roast beef, all the fixings and dessert; with plenty of helpings of love, hugs and kisses! Catherine leaves to mourn her two sons, Bradley and his wife, Kaye and their son, Dylan and Daniel and his wife, Karen and their daughters, Kiana and Emily and their son, Luke. She will also be sadly missed by her former husband, but still first and true love, Richard Thomson and her brother, Charles ‘Chuck’ McLellan. Catherine was predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret McLellan; her sisters, Dorothy, Isabel, Mary, Theresa and Patricia; and her brothers, Frank, Cyril, Greg, Tony, Leonard and John. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects one hour prior to the Funeral Service. A Funeral Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, November 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com.
