Construction on Alberta section of Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion has begun

LETHBRIDGE– After several years of delays, hurdles, and a $4.5-billion transaction from the federal government, work has finally started on its construction.

“Getting shovels in the ground in Alberta and kicking off pipeline construction is a pivotal moment for Trans Mountain,” said Ian Anderson, President and CEO of Trans Mountain.

“We are proud of the Project we have designed and the innovative measures we are implementing that demonstrate the kind of rigour and detail that will go into every stage of this Project to mitigate risks, respect the rights of those directly affected and operate safely.”

Tuesday’s work will see the start of approximately 50 km of pipeline running from Trans Mountain’s Edmonton Terminal in Sherwood Park to Acheson, Alberta.

Construction on the B.C. side of the project started back in the summer, beginning with the Burnaby Terminal.

By the end of this year, the company says as many as 4,200 people will be employed along the pipeline corridor.

“We will continue to fight,” says Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage. “To fight for investment, to fight for jobs, to fight for more pipelines and to fight to continue to develop our natural resources in a responsible manner for the benefit of all Canadians.”

“Alberta is a world leader in developing resources in an environmentally sound manner, and pipelines are the most efficient means of transporting those resources from the perspective of greenhouse gas emissions,” adds Alberta Environment and Parks Minister Jason Nixon.

The expansion will allow the pipeline to carry 890,000 barrels of oil per day, tripling its capacity.

It is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
