Kings bulldoze Clippers for second straight game

Powered by four first period goals, the RDC Kings hockey team skated to their seventh consecutive victory on Saturday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

The final score, an 8-2 blowout against Briercrest College (3-8-1) out of Saskatchewan, improves the Kings’ record to 10-1-1 on the ACAC season. They also beat the Clippers Friday night by a score of 7-1.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper talked post-game about keeping the foot on the gas.

“It’s about good habits, and special teams. Our powerplay was four for seven tonight and we were really good in the faceoff circle. It’s the little things like that,” he said.

“I thought we had a little bit of a slower start than yesterday. We were trying to make some long passes coming out of our zone and they were getting picked off a bit. The guys kind of woke up a third of the way into the first period and played consistently right through to the end of the game.”

In the opening frame, it was Carter Wolski drawing first blood for the Kings with his first career ACAC goal at the 4:55 mark.

Austin Hunter made it 2-0 Kings before Jarrett Marks cut the deficit to one for the Clippers.

Later in the period, Tyrell Mappin scored the first of four goals for RDC on the man advantage, and Wolski added another at even strength with 16 seconds remaining.

“I think I was a little overdue. I had that monkey on my back for a bit,” says Wolski, who also notched two assists and was named player of the game.

“I think with all 20 guys that are in here, we just do the job every night, we’re a really deep team and we usually come to play.”

Wolski, a kinesiology student, has seven points on the season.

In Saturday’s second period, Austin Hunter scored his second of the game, this time on the powerplay, and then Ross Heidt made it 6-1 headed to the third.

In the final period, all three goals came with the man advantage, Lynnden Pastachak and Jacob Wozney scoring for RDC.

RDC’s Nathan Alalouf earned the victory in net making 21 saves on 23 shots faced. Meanwhile, the Clippers’ Dan Dekoning was peppered with 51 shots and stopped 43.

The Kings wrap up the semester with a home and home against the SAIT Trojans on Nov. 29 and 30. RDC hosts the Trojans on Friday the 29th at 7 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.
