Rebels drop third straight in loss to Blades

The Red Deer Rebels are now 1-4 on their ongoing six-game road trip following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night.

D-man Radek Kucerik got the home team on the board first with his first career WHL goal at 8:03 of the opening period. The 6’2″ native of Kyjov, CZE was taken in the 2019 import draft by the Blades.

About six and half minutes later, Dallon Melin equalized for Red Deer with his second of the year. Jace Isley got the assist for his first career WHL point.

At 3:06 of the middle stanza, Kyle Crnkovic scored his fifth of the season, and while on the powerplay to put Saskatoon ahead once again.

Four minutes later, Eric Florchuk scored his ninth, also with the man advantage, to make it 3-1 Blades.

The Rebels gave up one and had two powerplays of their own in the third period, but unfortunately could not capitalize. And that was all she wrote.

Byron Fancy stopped 20 of 23 shots faced in the loss, moving his record to 1-3-0-1. At the other end, Nolan Maier turned away 28 of 29 shots for the win. He now sports a record of 8-6-1-1.

The loss leaves the Rebels with a record of 5-11-0-2, and third last in the Eastern Conference, five points back of a wild card spot. Thus far, Red Deer has given up the most goals this season in the WHL at 74.

Next up is the final game of this lengthy roadie through the prairies as the Rebels face the powerful Prince Albert Raiders (13-3-3-0 – 1st in the East Division). That game goes Saturday (Nov. 9) at 6 p.m. MT. The broadcast can be heard on 106.7 The Drive.

Red Deer returns home on Nov. 15 vs. Medicine Hat, kicking off four in a row at the Westerner Park Centrium.
