Suspect at large after incident near City’s civic yards

Oct 31, 2019 | 2:21 PM

A suspect remains at large following an incident on Red Deer’s north end Thursday afternoon.

Cst. Chantelle Kelly with RCMP K Division says members were called at about 12:15 to a scrap yard business on 78 Street Crescent.

Kelly says the business owner or an employee working that morning had noticed copper wire stolen and that one of the business’s doors was pried open.

After checking surveillance tape, that staff member conducted a search in the vicinity of the business and located a male. When approached, the male showed what appeared to be a firearm.

The staff member then backed off and called police, while the man fled.

Police Dog Services were brought in to do a search for the suspect, but were unsuccessful.

Meantime, The City of Red Deer had tweeted that their Civic Yards had been locked down. A spokesperson says they unfortunately used the wrong terminology to describe what was going on.

In actuality, civic yards staff had simply locked the doors to their buildings, but it wasn’t technically on lockdown.

RCMP continue to investigate. If you have information, contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
