Rebels blanked 5-0 at home by Portland

The Portland Winterhawks got an early Thanksgiving treat in Red Deer with a 5-0 shutout over the Rebels Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium.

The Winterhawks silenced the home crowd halfway through the first period on the powerplay thanks to Seth Jarvis’s hard shot from the left wing giving Portland a 1-0 lead.

Late in the first period, with just 18 seconds left, the Winterhawks broke out of their own zone where they had a three on two rush. Jarvis centered the puck and got a lucky bounce off of a Rebels defenceman’s stick before pin-balling off of Simon Knack’s shoulder pad and past Ethan Anders for a 2-0 Portland lead. Knack would be credited his third goal of the season.

Halfway through the second period, the Winterhawks caught the Rebels tired in their own zone and Anders bailed them out with an incredible toe save to take away the empty net one timer.

Rebels forward Jaxsen Wiebe’s physical play got him in trouble in the middle frame when he took a boarding penalty. This gave Portland another opportunity on the powerplay where captain Johnny Ludvig let a hard wrist shot go through traffic from the point that beat Anders for a 3-0 edge.

Portland added salt to the wound before the second period would come to an end with a hard snapshot from Clay Hanus that beat Anders high to the short side. Portland lead 4-0 after 40 minutes of play.

Byron Fancy started in net for the Rebels at the start of the third period after Anders allowed four goals in 29 shots.

The Winterhawks tested the Rebels backup within the first half of the final period. Jake Gricius found room in front of the net letting a shot in tight go on Fancy, who made a nice glove save on the inital shot before Gricius followed it up, batting the puck out of the air and in the net for the game’s final goal.

Portland’s goaltender Joel Hofer picked up his first shutout of the season stopping all 16 shots he faced. After stepping in for Anders in the third period, Fancy stopped 11 out of 12 shots he faced Friday night.

Jarvis had a fantastic night picking up three points and the first star of the game. Portland’s special teams had a great night going 2 for 5 on the powerplay and stopping one of the WHL’s best powerplays so far this season as the Rebels were 0 for 5 on the night.

The Rebels fell to .500 with the loss (4-4-0) heading into Medicine Hat Saturday night for a date with the Tigers. Tune into 106.7 The Drive with Cam Moon at 7:20 p.m.

Next home game for the Rebels will be October 18^th against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
