Weekly recap: September 6-8

This past weekend, the Kings & Queens Soccer teams opened the 2019-20 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season on the road. The RDC Queens split their two-game series while the Kings earned four of a possible six points in the standings. The Red Deer College Queens Hockey team was involved in some close exhibition contests at the RDC Icebreaker Tournament, and it picked up a victory. In non-conference play, the Kings Hockey team competed hard against the University of Calgary Dinos, but it dropped both games against the squad from U Sports.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics:

Queens Soccer | Saturday, September 7 | Medicine Hat College

The RDC Queens opened the season on a positive note with a 4-0 shutout against the Rattlers. Bachelor of Science Nursing student Alisha Coules recorded a hat trick and Red Deer’s Mikayla Fujimoto added a single. Queens goalkeeper Alethea Riemer earned the shutout.

Queens Soccer | Sunday, September 8 | Lethbridge College

In the second game of the road trip, the Red Deer College Queens worked hard but were blanked 3-0 by the Kodiaks. Rebecca McBride, a Bachelor of Science student from Calgary, was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game with a strong effort. The RDC Queens wrapped up the weekend with a 1-1-0 record, sharing third spot in the south standings with the Rattlers.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, September 7 | Medicine Hat College

The Kings and Rattlers played to a 0-0 draw in Medicine Hat. Kings goalkeeper Jacob Hamilton made six saves, helping RDC earn a point in the standings. Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto, a second-year midfielder from Brazil, was named the RDC Kings Player-of-the-Game.

Kings Soccer | Sunday, September 8 | Lethbridge College

On the strength of Nathan Swartz’s late game heroics, the RDC Kings picked up an impressive 3-2 road win against the Kodiaks. Matthew Elphick and Hugo Janssen also tallied for RDC. With the victory, the Kings (1-0-1) went undefeated on the weekend. They share first spot in the south with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-0-1) in the early stages of the season.
