Young newcomer from India drowns in Sylvan Lake

Aug 21, 2019 | 5:31 PM

Search crews have recovered the body of a young man who drowned in Sylvan Lake.

RCMP say the body of Palwinder Singh was found at 6:35 p.m. Thursday near where he was last seen before falling into the water Wednesday afternoon.

“The RCMP extends a thank you to all the agencies and citizens who provided support during this search,” said Cpl. Laurel Scott. “Family, friends and members of the public have been deeply affected by this tragic event.”

RCMP were called to a possible drowning at Sylvan Lake at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Police initially said two adult males were on inner tubes when a wave knocked them off. But after recovering the objects the males were on – police found they were not inner tubes, but rather “objects similar to round inflatables.”

One male was helped out of the water by other citizens who were close by on a dinghy. They were unable to locate the second male.

Following that, one of the occupants of the dinghy, a child, swam to shore for help. At no time were there any children needing rescuing, according to police.

Friends and relatives at the lake Thursday morning said Singh was part of a group of 11 that had taken a day trip from Edmonton. It was Singh’s first time outside of Edmonton since moving to Alberta.

Singh moved to the Alberta capital from India last November and was set to become a full-time college student studying business accounting this fall.

Lifelong friend Iqbal Mann said, “He came here to start a new life, to have a better future.”

“We’re still in shock this morning, expecting him to come out of the water,” said friend Maninder Kaloti. “We’re going to miss him.”

The search for Singh included the use of underwater cameras, boat/shore searches, and sonar.

The Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society, Underwater Recovery Team assisted RCMP in the search.
