Volunteers sought for barbed wire fence removal near Big Valley

Aug 13, 2019 | 9:17 AM

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for volunteers to help remove barbed wire fencing to make the Ferrier property, located 20 kilometres east of the town of Big Valley, more wildlife friendly on August 17!

The event, called Fence Free Ferrier, needs volunteers help from 8:30am to 5:00pm to take down a section of old fence on the Ferrier property to help make it more wildlife friendly. A bus provided by NCC will take volunteers from Red Deer out to the Ferrier property and back again for the event.

All of the tools and equipment for the day, along with delicious snacks and beverages, will be provided by NCC as well as a free sandwich lunch.

On the northwestern shore of Gough lake, lies 1,467 acres (594 hectares) of native grasslands, forests and wetlands. These diverse conditions attract a wide range of species, including prairie loggerhead shrike, western tiger salamander and porcupine.

Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Conservation Volunteers program engages Canadians of all ages in the protection of Canada’s species and natural habitats. These events provide meaningful, hands-on educational experiences in natural areas across the province.

Since 2006, NCC’s Conservation Volunteers program has engaged over 13,000 Canadians across 1,157 events from coast to coast.

To sign up for this event or to find other events in your area, visit www.conservationvolunteers.ca or call Hannah at 403-993-7695.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is the nation’s leading private, not-for-profit land conservation organization, protecting vital natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962, NCC has helped protect over 2.8 million acres (more than 1.1 million hectares), coast to coast. In Alberta, we have conserved more than 280,000 acres (11,300 hectares) of this province’s most ecologically significant land and water.
