RBC PGA Scramble event in Red Deer send two teams to nationals

Two amateur golf teams celebrated in our city Monday afternoon after punching their ticket to compete at a national championship.

The Red Deer Golf and Country Club hosted a regional qualifying event for the RBC PGA Scramble, presented by The Lincoln Motor Company.

Monday’s event featured teams that qualified at local club events held across the province throughout the season, joined by club pros for a five-person team. Over 175 local qualifiers were held across Canada followed by 11 regional qualifiers, including Monday’s in Red Deer.

The team representing the Leduc Golf Club made up of Dean Gavreau, Curtis Ferguson, Brad Schambel, David Jevne and club pro Chad Feener came out on top Monday, turning in a net score of 50.4 (55 gross).

The national championship be a homecoming of sorts for the team as three of the players, including Feener, are originally from Nova Scotia.

“It’s expensive to go home nowadays,” Feener remarked. “After four years we finally got the right team together and now we’re going. It’s going to be great.”

Feener says his teammates put in a great performance on Monday.

“Red Deer put on a good show today. It’s a shorter course that fit our game really well,” Feener said.

Joining the Leduc boys in Nova Scotia will be the Ft. McMurray team of Keith McGrath, Ben Farrington, Shaun Janvier, Chris Heavy Shield and Kyle Corriveau, who posted a net score of 50.5 (gross 56).

“It’s very humbling. We started this journey about two months ago by putting together a team that not only can we play golf together, we work together,” shared McGrath.

“One thing about having a team is to identify your weakness and build on that. When you make a bad shot, don’t get down and just carry on. That’s what makes true champions.”
