EDMONTON- A massive wildfire that forced thousands of people to flee their communities in northern Alberta in May and June is now classified as being held.
The provincial government says that means the Chuckegg Creek fire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries given current and forecast weather conditions.
But it says a large firefighting operation will continue because parts of the fire within those boundaries may still grow.
The province says teams from over 30 communities in Alberta as well as across the country and around the world have been helping to battle the blaze, which was last reported at more than 350,000 hectares in size.
