Attacker gets fast-track to prison for shoving Calgary grandmother onto rails

CALGARY- A woman who admitted to pushing an elderly woman off an LRT platform in Calgary while high on alcohol and drugs has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison.

Stephanie Favel, 35, was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to a charge of aggravated assault in the unprovoked November 2018 attack.

Rozalia Meichl, 64, was left a paraplegic after suffering head and upper back injuries when she hit the tracks.

A train entering the station managed stop before hitting her.

An agreed statement of facts submitted in court said both women were behind the yellow line on the platform when Favel shoved the victim, using her shoulder and elbow.

Favel told police that she had been drinking before the assault and a doctor’s report later revealed she had consumed a large amount of methamphetamine, cannabis, alcohol and Gravol.
