AltaLink hosting open houses for proposed new transmission line through central Alberta

Jul 15, 2019 | 11:10 AM

AltaLink is hosting a pair of open houses this week aimed at gathering public input on a proposed new transmission line through central Alberta.

Officials say the Central East Transfer-Out Project involves building an approximately 55-60 kilometre transmission line between the existing Gaetz sub-station located east of the City of Red Deer to an ATCO Electric line southeast of the Village of Alix.

According to AltaLink, the proposed transmission line routes and structure types have all been refined since first beginning stakeholder consultations in January. Further input from area residents is now being requested.

The first open house will take place on July 16 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Alix Community Hall (5008 49 Avenue).

The second open house will take place July 17 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Canyon Ski Resort.

OffIcials says the open houses will have visual displays, with project team members on hand to answer any questions.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) will also be in attendance to talk about the need for the project.

It’s hoped construction on the Central East Transfer-Out Project will begin in winter 2021, with completion of the first circuit in 2023 and the second circuit, if needed, between 2027-2029.
