Westbridge Cabinets closing its doors

Westridge Cabinets is closing its doors for good after more than 40 years.

The closure affects 78 employees at the company’s location in Gasoline Alley. They also have showrooms in Edmonton and Calgary.

“Westridge Cabinets is a victim of the difficult economic conditions being experienced across the province of Alberta,” the company says in a statement to rdnewsNOW.

“The prolonged economic recession that has persisted since 2014 has resulted in substantial losses with no end in sight. The new housing starts in Alberta have fallen 10% per year for the last five years and Westridge Cabinet’s revenue has fallen accordingly.”

The company says it has invested significant capital to reduce operating costs and cover cash losses that resulted from the collapse of the housing market.

They say they are taking “all reasonable steps” to ensure disruptions are minimized for customers and employees.

“Before making the decision that Westridge Cabinets file a Notice of Intent, we approached municipal, provincial, and federal governments and agencies for support. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in any of those discussions,” the company’s statement notes.

Westridge Cabinets will be winding down activities over the next four weeks.

According their website, Westridge Cabinets started as a distribution centre in Red Deer and became the largest fully-integrated cabinet manufacturer in Western Canada.
