The Town of Rocky Mountain House is working to collect on tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid property taxes.

Council passed a motion on Tuesday to take possession of two properties that did not sell at a Tax Recovery Public Auction on June 26.

The properties are more than $55,000 in arrears on property taxes.

The first property at 4520 – 46 Avenue had a reserve bid of $140,000 and had $31,332 outstanding in taxes. The property has had outstanding taxes since 2012 and is currently vacant.

The second, located at 6812 – 61 Street Close, had a reserve bid of $350,000 and has $25,629 in outstanding taxes. Payments on this property, which is currently occupied, were made sporadically throughout the years but has always been in some form of outstanding payment since 2002, according to Town officials.

“We have not any communication from either property owner. As such, administration has exhausted all avenues available to us through provincial legislation,” explained Christie.

If the houses were to sell, the Town would have to give whatever money is leftover after the debt is payed and all legal fees are covered back to the owner.

If the homes don’t sell, the Town will take control and may even bulldoze the titled properties for repurposing in an attempt to recoup any losses.

“In the notification they were sent it did clearly state that would be one of the recourses the municipality would have,” stated Christie.
