Triathletes take to Red Deer streets this weekend

Jun 20, 2019 | 10:34 AM

For the 19th year, athletes will swim, bike and run in the annual Woody’s Triathlon this weekend in Red Deer.

The event goes Saturday and Sunday for different age groups, and starts out with the swim portion at Michener Centre.

Chelsea Richer, committee member, says it should, once again, be a very fun pair of days.

“For Kids of Steel (on Saturday), we usually see about 500 athletes, and with the adults we usually see about 200. For a lot of those athletes, this is a family weekend, so the kids race is on Saturday and the parents go on Sunday,” says Richer.

“Our goal in Red Deer is to promote the sport and have youth and adults engage in something where it’s not about being the best, it’s about being your best. That’s the beauty of triathlon.”

This year’s event features a new category called Try-A-Tri, which is for ages 16+, but is an abridged version of the full race with a 300 metre swim, 6.7 km bike and 2.5 km run.

The full adult race on Sunday includes a 750 metre swim, 20 km cycle and five kilometre run.

The entire race course is spectator friendly, and organizers are still looking for many more volunteers. Sign up here.
