New Sylvan Lake water reservoir to be ready next year

Jun 17, 2019 | 3:34 PM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has broken ground on its new water reservoir and pump house.

The new infrastructure will have the capacity to support a population of up to 30,000 residents and be expanded to serve 45,000 people if needed.

Officials say the new reservoir and pump house will provide the Town the means to provide superior water service, supply, and fire protection, as well as promote further commercial, residential, and industrial growth in Sylvan Lake.

“Core infrastructure and the provision of quality water services to residents is a priority of this council,” says Mayor Sean McIntyre. “Addressing water storage is essential to ensuring a sustainable community; we are better positioned to sustain the existing population while seeking opportunities for economic growth.”

Originally budgeted at $10 million, plus a 10 per cent contingency, town council recently approved a budget amendment of $1.4 million to cover cost increases for the reservoir. The additional costs, according to a report to town council, come from engineering fees and land purchase.

Through this project, the Town will be upgrading its existing SCADA system – which monitors water and waste water systems – to provide more control on how these systems operate, allow more efficient response to issues within the network, and expand on the lifespan of the infrastructure.

The water reservoir and pump house are scheduled to be up and running in late 2020.
