UCP introduces Bill 9

Jun 14, 2019 | 7:53 AM

EDMONTON- The Kenney government has introduced legislation that would strip away some bargaining rights from an estimated 200,000 public sector workers.

Union leaders are calling it a gross violation of public trust and the first step to the province cutting public sector wages.

Workers who have been taking pay freezes are by law to have their wage rates reviewed and subject to binding arbitration right now and this fall.

Bill 9 proposes to cancel those hearings until after October 31.

The government says the move is necessary as it looks at where to cut spending.

Finance Minister Travis Toews states: “We owe it to Albertans, and all public sector workers, to come to the table with information on the state of our economy and the impact it will have on our finances, so we can make responsible and informed decisions. We will continue to work together with our union stakeholders in good faith. Negotiating without this information would be fiscally irresponsible and we are seeking the time to make the right decisions for all Albertans.”
