Fire destroys RV in Penhold

Jun 10, 2019 | 7:13 AM

Thankfully no one was injured when an RV went up in flames in Penhold over the weekend.

Penhold fire crews responded to the town’s RV park at about 6 p.m. Sunday with the initial report indicating people were trapped inside an RV while it was on fire.

“We arrived on scene to a fully-involved trailer, and talked to the owner who said everyone was out,” explained Fire Chief Jim Pendergast.

“The owner stated he was cooking and the oil spilled and started a fire. The owner went on to say he put the fire out and left the trailer to talk to some people, and a few minutes later when he looked back the trailer had fire coming from the roof.”

A pair of propane tanks, one which exploded and another with an open valve, were feeding the fire, Pendergast says.

Damage is estimated at $65,000 for the trailer and $15,000 for a nearby car.

“It’s very important that even if you think a fire is out to call 911,” Pendergast noted, “the fire department can come out and use special equipment, such as our thermal imaging and heat detectors, to find hidden fires or hot spots and make sure everything is ok.”
