taking a stand against family violence

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes back for 8th year

Jun 3, 2019 | 6:15 PM

For the eighth year, men from around central Alberta will take big steps this month in support of Women’s Outreach.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is all about taking a stand against family and gender-based violence, according to Women’s Outreach Executive Director Barb Barber.

“It can be your sister, your mother, your father, your brother; violence knows no gender,” says Barber. “To have people walking in high heel shoes, although it’s not easy, it makes a very good statement to have all these men walking and letting victims of family violence know they’re not alone.”

Barber estimates 2600 adults came through the doors of Women’s Outreach in 2018, and along with them around 4000 kids.

“If you have to leave in the middle of the night and all you can take is your children and run, you’re really starting from zero again. We help people rebuild their lives from ground zero up,” she says.

“Every year, we have to fundraise, and this year we have to raise $400,000 to meet our budget. This event goes a long ways to meeting that need so we can support families.”

The first event is the second annual edition in Sylvan Lake on June 6 at HJ Cody High School. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes a BBQ lunch.

The other is in Red Deer on June 13 starting at The Outreach Centre (4104 54 Avenue). The event begins at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, as well as sponsor booths, family fun and main stage entertainment.

The walk begins at noon, and a BBQ will be fired up for when participants are finished.
