A teacher in Castor has been honoured as central Alberta’s most outstanding rookie.

The Alberta School Board Association (ASBA) held their awards ceremony for Zone 4 on May 27 in Innisfail where Rebecca Clarke, a first-year teacher at Gus Wetter School, won the Edwin Parr Award.

The annual award is presented to first-year teachers who show exemplary dedication and commitment to the education of their students.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to be awarded the Edwin Parr Award for Zone 4,” said Clarke. “I would like to thank the Edwin Parr Committee, the Clearview Public Schools Board of Trustees for putting forth my nomination, and the staff and administration at Gus Wetter School for the support and encouragement this year!

“Thank you to my incredible students for your kindness, patience, laughs, and trust as I tried to find my way as a new teacher. You have all helped to make my first year so memorable and I am truly grateful to call Gus Wetter home.”

“I am delighted that Rebecca was awarded the prestigious Edwin Parr Award. Rebecca is a great young teacher, and we are proud to have her be a part of the Clearview family,” said Peter Baron, Superintendent for Clearview Public Schools. “She embodies all the qualities we look for in a first year teacher. She is innovative, hardworking and dedicated to her students.”

Clarke was born in Stettler and grew up on a farm just outside of Gadsby. She attended Botha School and graduated from William E. Hay in 2012.

After taking a year off she started a five year concurrent degree program at the Werklund School of Education (University of Calgary). She convocated in June 2018 with a Bachelor of Education, specializing in Secondary English, and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English and minoring in History.

In addition to teaching, Rebecca managed the Sr. Boys’ Volleyball team, helped organize Operation Christmas Child and is currently helping with the yearbook committee. She has really enjoyed working with students outside of the classroom and getting to see students succeed in something they feel passionate about.

Outside of school, Rebecca has been curling in the Castor Curling Club Ladies League. She enjoys knitting and crocheting and attending craft markets with her products. Since moving back to the area, she has enjoyed being closer to family and spends most of her free time with family and friends.
