Ponoka celebrates new civic building

May 26, 2019 | 4:41 PM

Ponoka residents had the chance to formally celebrate the official grand opening of the Town’s new Civic Building on Friday.

The facility first opened to the public in October 2018 and is home the Ponoka Jubilee Library and the Ponoka Learning Centre, which provides post-secondary options to youth and adult learners from more than 20 central Alberta communities.

On the upper two floors is the Town’s administrative offices, as well as Ponoka council chambers. Additional lease space is on the third floor.

In total, there is 28,000 square feet for the Town to lease, including where the library is situated.

“Campus Alberta Central is pleased to partner with the Town of Ponoka in the opening of our newest Learning Centre. Working with regional partners to identify potential programs that meet the specific needs of the Ponoka area will provide many new opportunities for learners in the region,” says Joel Ward, President and CEO of Red Deer College and Chair of CAC.

Meantime, Mayor Rick Bonnett says having all of these stops in one location is a huge benefit to Ponoka residents.

“The computers at the library are always full,” Bonnett says. “The art gallery and gathering space in the main entrance attract people throughout the day with tutoring sessions after school and citizens gather in the sitting area to read books, play cards and explore the library’s magazine racks.”

The new building is located on 50 Street on the site of the old hospital that was demolished in 2017.

The Town of Ponoka is holding a naming contest for the new building.
