May 21, 2019 | 3:30 PM

Red Deer’s annual celebration of sport is happening this weekend.

The fifth Xplore Sport Day goes Sunday, May 26 goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Servus Arena, Rotary Recreation Park and Red Deer Tennis Club.

Hosted by The City of Red Deer, the event is a free, family friendly celebration of sport that offers Red Deerians of all ages opportunities to try out a variety of sport and recreation activities available in our city.

“This event is a great opportunity for families to learn about different sports and activities available to them in their community, to try them out, to ask the organizers questions and register,” said Deb Comfort, Neighbourhood Facilities & Community Development Supervisor.

“We’re pleased to showcase 25 different sport groups this year, which include summer, winter and year-round activities for Red Deerians to explore.”

An open house format, the event features information sessions, demonstrations and interactive activities presented by local sport organizations. Guests are encouraged to check out displays, watch demos, and learn about new activities for themselves and their family members.

Xplore Sport Day also includes the presentation of Rising Sport Star awards to athletes aged 11 years or younger who participate in a Red Deer sport organization and have demonstrated commitment, passion, effort or who have overcome adversity to successfully participate and develop skills, regardless of result. Mayor Tara Veer will present the awards at 11 a.m. at Servus Arena.
