Large portion of Lacombe recyclables ending up in the landfill

Changes are coming to the way Lacombe residents recycle.

The City of Lacombe revealed in a release this week that as it turns out, a portion of the items citizens have been recycling is still ending up in the landfill.

“Our recycling contractor (E360S, previously CanPak) has advised the City that due to the challenges faced by the recycling industry nation-wide, only a fraction of the materials currently placed in residential blue bins is actually recycled, and that significant changes are needed to Lacombe’s residential recycling program if it is to continue,” the release states.

“Buyers of wholesale recycling materials are now only willing to accept specific types of recyclables, so it is no longer viable for our contractor to continue collecting a wide range of materials from Lacombe households.”

Materials currently being recycled include No. 2 plastics, clean paper/cardboard, and bottle deposit containers, while everything else collected from blue boxes is sent to the landfill.

The City says residential curbside recycling is becoming increasingly expensive, and keeping it going would mean a 66 per cent increase to program costs, from $4.50 to $7.50 monthly per household.

Council will be making a decision on the blue box recycling program at their meeting on May 27.

Meantime, council has also approved the scope of a comprehensive solid waste system review. Work will begin immediately.
