Alberta’s Freedom Conservatives pick interim boss

May 9, 2019 | 7:21 AM

EDMONTON – The former politician who founded his own party after he was kicked out of the United Conservative caucus says he is done with political life.

Former Freedom Conservative leader Derek Fildebrandt says he has a new life outside of what he calls the colonoscopy of partisan politics and media.

David White will lead the party until a permanent leader is chosen next year.

White, is a paramedic and small business owner.

During the provincial election, White ran for the FCP in the central Alberta riding of Maskwacis-Wetaskiwin.

He says even though the party was shut out of the legislature in last month’s election, it will be vocal over the next four years to hold Premier Jason Kenney’s government to account.

The party ran 24 candidates in the election on a platform of slashing personal and business taxes, cutting government spending, ending all interprovincial trade barriers and privatizing Crown corporations.

It attracted fewer than 10,000 votes.

That was less than one per cent of total votes cast.
