Red Deer man found guilty of aggravated assault and mischief in Oriole Park stabbing

May 3, 2019 | 4:45 PM

A Red Deer man charged in an Oriole Park stabbing nearly two years ago has been found guilty of aggravated assault and mischief under $5,000.

Linden Joseph Lee Buffalo, 29, was convicted on the two counts in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Friday in relation to the Aug. 6, 2017 incident.

That’s when RCMP attended a residence on Orient Green to investigate complaints of a serious assault.

However, police say a second call came in soon afterwards regarding a man at Red Deer Regional Hospital suffering from serious stab wounds.

The investigation determined the two calls were related and the injured man was the victim of the earlier assault call.

While rendering her decision on Friday, Madam Justice Marilyn D. Slawinsky recounted the incident as an alcohol-fueled domestic argument that escalated into one individual suffering serious injuries after being stabbed with a large knife in the neck, hip and hand.

Court heard the incident took place at Buffalo’s residence after a long night of drinking when he and his common-law wife began to argue over Buffalo’s alleged interactions with other women at the bar that night.

Justice Slawinsky recounted the couple’s argument escalated to the point where Buffalo’s wife locked herself in a bathroom and contacted her father for help.

He arrived soon afterwards and became entangled in a fight with Buffalo after punching him in the face while Buffalo lay in his bed pretending to be asleep.

Buffalo’s wife, infant child and father-in-law then fled the residence to Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Justice Slawinsky told court she felt Buffalo acted unreasonably after the first two knife blows to his father-in-law and should have known he was not an intruder after repeated attempts by his father-in-law to identify himself to Buffalo during their fight.

“The continued attack was unreasonable and excessive,” said Slawinsky.

Buffalo’s case returns to court for arraignment on June 3 to set a date for sentencing.
