Record voter turnout for provincial election

A new record was set, but it looks like voter turnout in the recent provincial election was slightly lower than initially thought.

Elections Alberta made it official Friday that 64.0 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot on April 16. That represents an all-time high 1,894,985 votes, including nearly 700,000 cast in advance.

Unofficial results in the days after the election suggested numbers eclipsed the 70 per cent mark.

The highest voter turnout was in Grande Prairie-Wapiti which saw 80.2 per cent come out to elect UCP candidate Travis Toews.

The lowest was 45.8 per cent in Calgary-East where UCP candidate Peter Singh won a seat in the Legislature.

Official voter turnout numbers for central Alberta constituencies are as follows:

Red Deer-North: 62.6 per cent
Red Deer-South: 69.8 per cent
Innisfail-Sylvan Lake: 69.5 per cent
Lacombe-Ponoka: 69.4 per cent
Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre: 70.0 per cent
Drayton Valley-Devon: 68.9 per cent
Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills: 66.5 per cent
Drumheller-Stettler: 68.6 per cent
