ALBERTA VOTES

Advance polls see huge turnout on day one

Apr 10, 2019 | 4:32 PM

If early numbers are any indication, Albertans are motivated to cast their ballot in the provincial election.

Elections Alberta is reporting that approximately 140,000 voters cast their ballot on Tuesday, the first day of advance polling for the April 16 election.

That’s up well over double from the 58,000 Albertans who voted on the first day of advance polling for the 2015 election.

New for this year is the ability for voters to cast their ballot at any advance polling location in the province. Elections Alberta says approximately 33,000 took advantage of this opportunity on Tuesday.

Jim Taylor, Returning Officer for the Red Deer-South constituency, says 1292 ballots were cast at their office at 3617 Gaetz Ave. on Tuesday. Of those votes, 1060 were cast for Red Deer-South candidates and 232 for candidates running in other ridings.

In Red Deer-North, Returning Officer Fred Gorman says just under 2000 votes were cast at their Parkland Mall location on Tuesday.

Advance polls run until Saturday. More information is available at elections.ab.ca
