On Friday, Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer proclaimed April 7-13 in recognition of the city’s many volunteers and the hard work they do year-round.
The same dates also represent National Volunteer Week.
To celebrate, community organizations and agencies set up shop at Parkland Mall on Saturday to show the community what kind of opportunities are out there.
Kay Kenny, board chair with Red Deer-based Volunteer Central, says she hasn’t seen another community that steps up like ours does when it comes to volunteerism.
“At this point in time, on our website, approximately 70 opportunities are up for people looking to help with board development, be a board member, help with events in the community, or be a mentor to a child,” Kenny says. “There are just so many opportunities you would not believe.”
Thanks to the 2019 Canada Winter Games, an already thriving volunteer base is now overloaded with 4600 new people added to the database. Kenny says that brings the registry to about 6000.
