Maile drives in winning run as Blue Jays sweep double header with Royals
TORONTO — Luke Maile’s offensive game has benefited from added playing time this season and it showed as the Blue Jays catcher drove in the game-winning run in Toronto’s 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals, the second half of a doubleheader on Tuesday.
“With (Russell Martin) on that two days on, one day off — it’s got to help him,” said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “He’s using the whole field, he’s shooting balls the other way, couple today.
“That’s big for him ’cause he does everything great behind the plate, and now he’s not only getting hits, he’s getting big hits.”
The Blue Jays defeated the Royals 11-3 in the first game. It was the third time in franchise history the Blue Jays played host to a doubleheader at the Rogers Centre. Toronto won both contests on July 17, 1989 against the Angels and took two from the Cleveland Indians on Oct. 5, 2001.
