Bucs anticipating promising football season ahead

After finishing 6-2 and third place in the Alberta Football League (AFL) last year, the Central Alberta Buccaneers have high hopes for their 2018 campaign.

That according to Vince Roth, Co-Chair and Offensive Lineman for the Red Deer and Lacombe-based Senior Men’s competitive football team.

Roth says there are some fresh faces showing a lot of promise in the early goings of spring camp which opened in mid-April.

“We’ve also got some returnees from last season and a couple of seasons ago that we know are pretty talented guys,” adds Roth. “So I think we’re going to put a nice, strong squad together this year and compete well in this league.”

He says quarterbacks and receivers will be among the team’s strengths this upcoming season.

“I think we’re going to have a great passing game,” states Roth. “Coach Hand’s defensive schemes are pretty interesting to look at, so I’m excited to see what our defense does. I think they’re going to be tough in all areas of the game.”

“Our O-line is looking bigger and stronger than it was last year and it wasn’t bad last year at all,” Roth continues. “I think we’ve got some decent running backs but it would be nice to see a couple more guys, a little more depth at running back maybe but the guys that we do have certainly know how to run the ball.”

A new home field at Setter’s Place in Great Chief Park is another aspect of the 2018 season the Bucs are excited about.

“Everybody is really looking forward to it, it’s a beautiful facility,” Roth points out. “Ideally, it will be putting us in front of a lot more people but I already know it’s going to be a fun place to play.”

As for the coaching staff, it remains intact from last year with Fred Knip returning as Head Coach and former Head Coach Devon Hand coming back from a year off to be the Defensive Coordinator this season.

The team is currently running practices on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Lacombe until May 12 when they end their spring camp with an inter-squad game and community BBQ.

“Anybody who wants to come out and watch that, there will be food and drink for you there at no charge,” says Roth. “After our Inter-squad game, we’ll cap that off with our Pub Night (at Bo’s Bar & Grill) and then we roll into our regular practices and start our regular season routine the week after May 12th. Our first game is June 2, we have a Week One bye this year.”
