Hagel scores four in Rebels Black and White Game

As he told rdnewsNOW earlier this week, Brandon Hagel feels he has something to prove this season.

The veteran Red Deer Rebels forward doesn’t appear to be taking any nights off in his quest to do so. He scored four goals and set up two more to pace Team White to a 8-3 win in the Black and White intrasquad game Wednesday night at the Enmax Centrium.

Hagel leaves next week to skate at rookie camp with the Montreal Canadiens after going unsigned by the Buffalo Sabres.

“It starts from day one. I just have to keep moving forward. I leave right away here so I want to leave on a good note and go there on a good note,” Hagel said. “If I end up coming back, I want to leave there on a good note as well.”

Ethan Rowland, the Rebels’ first selection at the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft and a strong bet to make the regular season roster, scored a pair of goals for Team White on Wednesday.

“He’s an elite player at 16. He’s been pushing to play on our hockey team and now he’ll get opportunities to play as we go through exhibition,” Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter said of Rowland.

Oleg Zaytsev and River Fahey also scored goals for Team White.

Alex Morozoff, Blake Sydlowski and Josh Tarzwell scored for Team Black.

Ethan Anders allowed five goals on 20 shots through two periods before Carter Serhyenko played the third period in goal for Team Black. Byron Fancy went the distance for Team White and made 25 saves.

Defenceman Jacob Herauf piled up four assists in the game for Team White.

“It’s a game to measure where a lot of the young kids are at. See guys who are fighting to play on the team,” said Sutter.

“Every day they have to show an impression that they belong here. In the black and white game, the level of intensity is at the highest it’s been in training camp. You get a good measure on everybody and where they are at, at this point.”

After the game the Rebels announced nine moves to reduce their roster to 34 players:

Forwards – Nick de Beurs (Cochrane, AB), Jayden McCarthy (Morris, MB), Josh Medernach (Lloydminster, AB), Keaton Sorensen (Red Deer, AB), and Jaxsen Wiebe (Moose Jaw, SK)

Defencemen – Skyler Cameron (Nanaimo, BC), Blake Gustafson (Ardrossan, AB), Garret Valk (North Vancouver, BC), and Mason Ward (Lloydminster, AB).

“Everyone that is leaving after the game, we’ve been very happy with,” Sutter noted.

The Rebels take on the Edmonton Oil Kings this Friday at 7 p.m. as they kick off a preseason tournament at the Enmax Centrium.
