Rebels pot six in pre-season victory over Edmonton

There were goals aplenty in the Red Deer Rebels’ first kick at the can in WHL pre-season action at the Enmax Centrium Friday night.

Red Deer battled to a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings, who along with the Calgary Hitmen and Kootenay Ice, are in town for an exhibition tournament this weekend.

“There were moments where we were better than others, but it’s the first game of the exhibition season, so some guys hadn’t played together,” said head coach Brent Sutter after the game. “Both teams obviously have a lot of young kids in their lineups. It’s good to see how guys handle certain things.”

Red Deer got on the board first, Colin Paradis scoring just five minutes in.

Edmonton would equalize late in the period, but before 20 minutes were in the books, Austin Schellenberg put the Rebels back up 2-1.

In the second, Edmonton scored twice in the first seven minutes, including once shorthanded, to leapfrog to a 3-2 lead.

Red Deer battled back, however, getting a goal with a two-man advantage from Dawson Barteaux. Jordan Borysiuk reclaimed the lead for Red Deer not long after, making it 4-3.

Reese Johnson would then make it 5-3 ahead of the second intermission.

In the third, Red Deer native Josh Tarzwell got some insurance, making it 6-3.

Edmonton scored a pair late to make it 6-5, but that was as close as they’d come.

Red Deer finished 3/7 on the powerplay and had 37 shots to Edmonton’s 35. Goaltender Byron Fancy stopped 30 of those for the win.

D-man Barteaux said it felt good to get the win.

“It’s a positive game for sure to see how we compare against other guys and prospects,” he said. “To take them out was big for us.”

Barteaux leaves Tuesday for Texas where he’ll participate in Dallas Stars rookie camp.

“I’ve got some nerves in me, but I’m super excited,” he added. “It’s something new and it’s been my childhood dream forever.”

On Saturday, the Oil Kings play the Kootenay Ice at 3 p.m. and then the Rebels host the Hitmen at 7, both games at the Enmax Centrium. Tickets are $10 and get fans into both games.
