WATCH: Bucs confident for home opener despite season opening loss

The Central Alberta Buccaneers are focusing on the positives as they prepare for their home opener this weekend.

The Bucs return to Great Chief Park for the first time in seven years to take on the Airdrie Irish in Alberta Football League action.

Last Saturday, the Buccaneers travelled to Fort McMurray where they were upended 32-10 by the Monarchs.

“I think a lot of the shortcomings [from that game] are things we can fix and build on, easily,” says Buccaneers Chairman and offensive lineman Vince Roth. “I’m optimistic for the way the rest of the season is going to unfold.”

Last week marked the return of former league MVP quarterback Brandon Leyh to the Buccaneers lineup. He completed 57.5 per cent of his passes for 327 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

“He wasn’t 100 per cent happy with his game, which is encouraging,” Roth feels. “He knows he can get better so I’m looking forward to seeing that.”

The offense suffered a devastating blow, however, with the loss of star receiver Axsivier Lawrence to an Achilles injury. Lawrence had 207 receiving yards versus the Monarchs but will miss the remainder of the season.

Defensively, the Buccaneers recorded six quarterback sacks against the Monarchs. Roth says that’s a sign of more good things to come from a “vicious” front seven.

The return to Great Chief Park should provide a spark for the Buccaneers as they take on an Airdrie team that is out to a 2-0 start to the season.

“It’s going to be an exciting place to play,” says Roth. “Even out in Lacombe we had good crowds – Lacombe is a good community. I think with the population base as good as it is, moving to Red Deer, it should get better.”

Admission for Saturday’s game is $5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
