ASDC-Central Female Athlete of the Month: Emily Brown

Jun 14, 2018 | 9:59 AM

A competitive rugby athlete has been named the Alberta Sport Development Centre-Central Female Athlete of the Month for June.

Emily Brown is a 17-year-old grade 12 student at William E. Hay Secondary School in Stettler and a resident of Big Valley, Alberta.

She’s described as a multi-sport athlete that plays all school sports plus hockey and fastball. In grade 11, Brown led the W.E. Hay Wildcats to an ASAA Provincial Championship in Basketball and in the spring of last year started her rugby journey when the Wildcats added rugby to their school’s sport offerings.

Brown has already shown a strong commitment to rugby, developing the sport in Stettler and surrounding area by running school and community clinics. She joined the Titans Rugby Club in Red Deer last summer and was part of the Titans incredible run of success last season.

In January of this year, Brown was invited to captain the Red Deer/Central Alberta Rugby 7’s team and captured their first tournament championship in January. This spring, she was chosen to represent Alberta as part of Rugby Alberta’s 7’s team that competed at Rugby Canada’s 7’s Nationals in Vancouver, bringing home the silver medal.

It’s expected the Honours student will continue to compete for both the Titans and Alberta this summer before attending the University of Alberta this fall where she will major in Kinesiology and hopefully make the Pandas Rugby roster.
