UPDATE: Edmonton Amber Alert suspect charged with kidnapping

Edmonton police have charged the man they said had ‘forcibly abducted’ a teenage girl in Edmonton on Friday afternoon.

The incident led to an Ambert Alert being issued, though the girl was located safe a short time later.

It was about 2:40 p.m. on Friday when police say the accused drove up to a school in the area of 84 Street and 105 Avenue and approached a 14-year-old male who was walking towards the school.

The accused asked the male about the girl he was originally accused of later abducting.

After a short exchange with the boy, the man allegedly produced a hand gun and yelled at the male youth to get into the vehicle, a red Nissan Maxima. The boy ran towards the school to get away.

A short time later, witnesses observed the accused approach a 14-year-old girl. In this exchange, the girl’s cell phone was taken. It was reported to police that the girl then hesitantly got into the man’s car before the pair drove away.

Witnesses ran into the school to inform a resource officer.

An Amber Alert was then issued at 4:10 p.m. and rescinded about a half hour later when the girl was located safe and unharmed at 97 Street and 118 Avenue in the city’s northwest.

Jacques Sennesael, 47, was charged today with kidnapping with firearm, possession of an offensive weapon, intimidation, use of a firearm while attempting an indictable offence, possession for the purpose of trafficking (x2), and theft under $5,000. 

The kidnapping charge is in connection to the exchange he had with the 14-year-old boy, according to police.

EPS say Sennesael and the girl know each other, adding there is not sufficient evidence to charge the man in relation to the alleged abduction.
