Weekend Wrap-Up: Dec 1-2

The pair have rescued three dogs themselves, one of which passed away a year ago this weekend.

In hopes of raising their target of $5000 for the humane society, a second open house has been added so people can see the Christmas tree display and donate to the cause.

It goes from 1-4 p.m. on Dec. 9 at 42 Comfort Close.

Speaking at the Christmas Artisan Market at the Westerner, Carol Kelly with the Medicine River Wildlife Centre says they are very close to finishing fundraising for their new million dollar hospital.

In fact, they need just $100,000 more to do the job.

Kelly said their message this time of year is that the more the public helps them, the more help they can offer wildlife. But they also want people to try understanding their wild neighbours better.

“People can start by not believing rumours and misinformation, researching, calling us and other experts, and just making some decisions about keeping their yard safer, and less attractive to unwanted wildlife.”

Kelly says that could include not leaving rain barrels open, and not having sheds which animals can get under.

Kelly is confident they’ll be able to welcome the public — and animals, of course — into their new hospital sometime in 2019.

Organizers raised more than $16,000 on Saturday during the latest charity checkstop.

That total is more than $5000 over last year’s total.

The fundraiser took place, as usual, on Taylor Drive between 32 Street and 43 Street. Santa was on hand as well.

All donations will be distributed to the Women’s Outreach, Red Deer Christmas Bureau, Red Deer Food Bank, and M.A.D.D.

— Snow and Ice

The City of Red Deer hosted its first ever Snow and Ice Day at the Civic Yards on Saturday.

Santa was (also) there of course, but more importantly, families got the chance to see and climb into some of the vehicles crews use to deal with hazardous winter road conditions.

As well, The City had residents load a loader with warm clothing items which will be donated to local social agencies.
