Sylvan Lake formalizes new waste management solution

Jan 3, 2019 | 8:53 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has taken another step towards having a No Landfill Disposal Facility in the community.

Town officials say agreements have now been signed and formalized with Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. to build and operate the future facility, meaning Fogdog can now proceed with their application to Alberta Environment and Parks for final approval.

Officials point out the agreements have been reviewed and negotiated by both parties, including legal consultants, with The Town confident the community stands only to benefit from what is described as an innovative means of collecting, converting, and reusing waste.

Sylvan Lake mayor Sean McIntyre says signing both a Master Services Agreement and Facility Ground Lease with Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. helps establish The Town as a leader in creative waste management.

“It’s an exciting prospect for the community,” states McIntyre. “If we’re able to move forward with a No Landfill Disposal Facility, that will align with council’s strategic plan and our mission to deliver fiscally responsible, environmental stewardship.”

“It’s great to see Municipalities converting these legacy landfill processes, and turning them into revenue positive and cost-savings solutions,” adds Marlon Lee, Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. in a press release. “Waste is a resource; we have a short time to turn climate change around. Decisions like this gets Canada one step closer to true climate change.”

Following approval from Alberta Environment and Parks, both Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. and the Town of Sylvan Lake are said to be optimistic a future facility could be up and running within 24 months.

Town officials say further information regarding a No Landfill Disposal Facility and what it would mean for Sylvan Lake is expected early in the New Year.
