Alberta’s top cops agree to new rules on naming murder victims

CALGARY- Some new rules agreed to by 11 Alberta police chiefs could mean the names of homicide victims will be kept from the public for privacy reasons.

A policy adopted in principle at a meeting of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police lays out how and when police forces name homicide victims in investigations.

The document says releasing an identity must be in the public good and families of the deceased should be considered as additional victims.

Calgary police Chief Roger Chaffin says public interest does not trump privacy.
