Despite severely outshooting their opponents, the Red Deer Rebels five game winning streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon.

They fell 7-3 to the Calgary Hitmen at the Saddledome, even though they outshot their Central Division rivals 37-24.

The Western Hockey League’s leading goal scorer, Carter Sanderson, led the way offensively for Calgary with a hat trick. Meanwhile, Hitmen forward Calder Hamilton had a pair of goals as well.

For the Rebels, forward Grayden Peterson had two goals, the first two-point game of his WHL career, and Captain Beckett Hamilton recorded a goal and two assists.

Calgary claimed an early lead with two goals within the first eight minutes of the game from Grady Anaka and Hunter Aura.

Peterson then got Red Deer on the board with a power-play marker near the midway point.

In the second period, the Hitmen took a 5-1 lead with three unanswered goals from Hamilton and Sanderson.

In the third period, the Rebels made things interesting with two power-play goals from Hamilton and Peterson.

Peterson’s came first nearly 5:30 into the final frame when he followed up his own shot to knock in the rebound.

Meanwhile, Hamilton’s power-play goal found the back of the net within the final five minutes of the game.

Despite the Rebels’ late push, the Hitmen solidified the victory with an empty-net goal from Sanderson and one more from Calder Hamilton.

Rebels goaltender Nathan Salisbury made 17 saves on 23 shots, and Hitmen goalie Aidan Hesse had 36 saves on 39 shots.

Next up, the Rebels will welcome the Penticton Vees to the Centrium on Friday, Oct. 23 and the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Good news for Rebels fans: the team remains at the top of the Central Division standings with a 7-3-0-1 record. They are five points ahead of the second-place Hitmen.
