She Taught Us All: Honouring the Legacy of Jean Stewart
A General of the Christian Faith – a woman of God, a spiritual mother in Israel, has graduated onto her eternal reward at 92 years of age – Jean Stewart on June 16th, 2026.
I have had the honour of knowing this woman throughout my lifetime, making it 44 years to-date. At eight years of age, I met her at the Bible camp – Camp Living Water that she and her husband Larry had started 48 years ago. That ministry continues today in Alberta and also in British Columbia, Canada. This camp is a ministry primarily to First Nations children and teens at no cost to the campers. I was there at the camp’s first location in the early 1980s.
It was there where I had come into an awareness about Jesus and the importance of accepting Him into your heart. It was also the first place where I had seen people excited about God, where God’s love and presence was tangible. I attended this camp every summer, from the first time I went right up into my teenage years when I would return as a youth volunteer. Going to this camp was like returning to a well for a deep drink of spiritual living water. It was my place of refuge every summer.
My one-on-one relationship with Jean and her husband began to form when I was 20-years-old in the year 1995, while I was living in Calgary as a student at Victory Bible College. I remember as I was going to the Victory NW church, I was sitting alone that Sunday. There as I looked to my right was Jean and Larry both smiling at me. What a wonderful surprise! They were in Calgary for the weekend and attended the church that Sunday. What a God-ordained moment! They took me out for dinner after the church service was over. This is when I asked them about returning to camp the next summer and being there full-time, even to come earlier to help get things ready around the camp. They were delighted that I volunteered my services and said that I could stay at their place on weekends.
