Clarification to Aug. 2 story about rights of WestJet passengers

Aug 6, 2026 | 2:19 PM

In a story about the WestJet labour disruption published on Aug. 2, The Canadian Press reported that under Canadian regulations, WestJet does not owe customers any compensation beyond a fare refund in the event of a strike.

In fact, for passengers booked on international flights, airlines may also have obligations to reimburse passengers for expenses under international agreements such as the Montreal Convention, a global treaty that governs liability for international travel. Canada signed this treaty in 2001.
